Until a loft is opened, the air inside it just sits there getting warm. That is what tonight will feel like. Warm air that has been shut in too long 🔓. The moment it is let out, nothing in the room stays cool. It smells of old cardboard and dry wood up there. Not sweet, not clean, just warm and closed-in. The evening will have exactly that weight to it. Heavy without being heavy, if you follow 💡. There will be a long stretch where nothing happens. A hand on a rung, a hand on a waist, a lot of not-moving. The wood will tick 🔥. That stretch is the best part and I will drag it out. After that the warm air wins. My back will be against the cupboard and yours will not be far. There will be marks and there will be noise. The word slow will get said and ignored 💋. The cardboard smell gets into my hair every single time. It ends up in your mouth as much as it does in mine. Sensible leaves the room somewhere around then. Everything worth having in this evening happens after it goes. Above the cupboard the warm air will be gone and the loft will be cold again. The wooden ladder will be leaning wherever it fell. Tomorrow somebody has to put it back. Tomorrow can take care of itself.
