Saturday dawn, and my trekking backpack is already heavier than it should be. Water, a flask of chai, a thin blanket, and a black lace set I packed for no reason at all. 🎒 We start up the trail before the sun is properly out. By mid-morning the path gets steep and I give up acting brave. I keep asking you to pull me up the rocks. Your hand on my wrist, then my waist, then lower than it needs to be. At the top there is a small stream. Shoes off, socks off, then the sweaty t-shirt, and I wade in up to my knees in just the top half of that lace set. You stay on the rock and watch every drop run down. 💦 Lunch is a packet of glucose biscuits in the shade. Stream water dripping off my braid onto your collar, my cold fingers warming up on your stomach, and your breathing going strange. The walk down takes forever because we keep stopping. Kissing against a tree trunk, bark scraping your back, my leg hooked round yours. A group of college boys comes round the bend and we laugh and walk on. By dark we reach the little homestay, one room, one blanket, legs aching. I straddle you with trail mud still on my ankles. Slow at first because everything hurts, then I forget it hurts, and the wooden cot creaks loud enough for the whole valley. 🔥 Past midnight you say we should sleep, darling, the bus leaves at dawn. I clamp the frayed blanket edge between my teeth and go again, louder, and the valley is welcome to every sound. My backpack is still half packed. Take me up a hill near Alwar, or skip the climb and I walk through your door with the same trail dust on my shoes. 😘
