Chaukhat of the second window is my level. Nobody on our crew owns a spirit level. 🌙 I stand back one pace and run my eye from the putlog to that chaukhat. Seven o'clock, and the first putlog goes up by guess. Seven ten, and my eye says it sits low on the left. Jeori comes loose, the putlog lifts a finger, and the chaukhat agrees with it. Nine o'clock. Four bays are sighted off that same chaukhat. Our laskar checks one with a string and then puts his string away for the season. Noon, and the chaukhat has a woman's face in it. Somebody lives behind that window and she watches my eye working. She has stopped closing her shutter on us. ✨ Three o'clock, and the frontage is too bright to sight along. I sit on the phatta until the glare moves off the chaukhat. My blouse dries on me while I wait. 🔥 Five, and the whole frame runs true to one chaukhat. Beldar carries the gatthar down to the pavement. I take my own time on the sidhi, because the chai bench is full. 👀 Nine at night. No chaukhat, no putlog, nothing to sight along at all. My eye has other work and my mouth has more. I bite slow, and I keep going well past the hour I should. 💋😈 Six tomorrow the chaukhat will be exactly where it has stood all season. Every putlog on this frontage still answers to it. I answer to nothing whatsoever.
