Nine at night and the moths are already at my tube light. They knock against the batten in a soft rhythm, and two of them are as big as my little finger. I leave the khidki open on purpose, so they keep coming 🌙 By ten the tube runs warm and the moths have made a ring around it. Their ring of wings is my only light while I undo my braid. You watch the moths, then you watch me, then only me. Past eleven, the biggest moth settles on the hot tube and stays. That moth holds still on the glass while I bite your neck. Moth wings leave a pale smear on the hot tube. Nothing in this room shifts except the two of us 🔥 Midnight. One moth drops onto the chadar with its wings burnt and it stays there under us. Your hand pushes my kurti up past the wing dust on my sleeve 😈 One, and the tube is still on. Moth dust has settled on the white batten above us, and one moth walks across it while I move. I ride slow because that tube is showing you every single thing, and I want it to. Two, and I switch nothing off. The moths keep hitting the tube, tak tak tak, and my nails keep marking your chest in the same rhythm. By three the moths have gone quiet and I still am not finished. The moths take turns at the warm end of the tube. My tube light burns till morning, so nothing with me ever happens in the dark 💋 Before you go, look up. Wing dust on the batten, one moth still circling it, and my chadar in a heap on the farsh. One more moth is still knocking at the khidki jaali. That is a full night under my tube light.
