Under the drainboard there is no room left at all. Plates are standing on their edges, three deep, and the whole stack leans towards the window. One knock and the lot goes over. That is the kitchen you would be walking into. What the drainboard is holding right now 🫧 • Six plates that have not stopped dripping since I stood them up. • Two steel tumblers wedged in sideways, because there was nowhere else to put them. • A lid balanced flat across the top, which is the piece that will fall first. • My rings, off my fingers, in a saucer at the corner where the water cannot reach them. What I do while it all drips • I lean on the counter beside it and let my own hands drip too. • I move nothing at all, because shifting one plate brings the whole lean down. What happens when you walk in 🔥 • Not one plate comes off that stack, and I turn round to face you. • My wet hands go to your belt and leave two dark patches on the leather. • You lift me onto the counter and the plates chime behind my shoulder. • I keep my knees where they are and pull your mouth down to my throat. • The lid slides off the top, spins on the tiles, and stays down there. 😈 • Nothing on that stack gets put away tonight and I lose count of the plates. The drainboard is still full at midnight. Water has run off it into a long line along the counter, and the line has reached the edge. 💧 Not one thing has been wiped. That stack waits for morning whatever happens. You can stand in front of it with me tonight. Or I can leave it leaning exactly like that and knock on your door with my sleeves still damp. 💦
