Dismantled by four, the commutator and the stator are lying apart under the bulb. The commutator is the piece I kept back for myself. Its copper went black at the brush end, and black suits it. 🔥 What the commutator wants. Regmaal, slow, in one direction only. No file anywhere near that copper, ever. My thumb reads a commutator better than the multimeter does. 👀 What I want. Puller holds the rotor while my mouth stays completely free. A free mouth plus a warm commutator makes me careless by four o'clock. Careless is the word my ustadji had for me, and the megger agrees with him. 💋😈 The part nobody asks about. Armature goes into the varnish before the commutator goes back on. Varnish must not touch that copper, so I hold it bare-fingered. Bare fingers all afternoon, then your shirt in them. 🔥 The bench test. Megger reads the windings first, then the brushes go onto the commutator. One spark, and it settles down. I throw more than one. 👀 What you get to watch. Commutator spins up and the stator starts to buzz. I lean over those laminations close enough to feel the heat through my blouse. After that the commutator gets a lot less of my attention. 💋 What the oscillator has to do with it. Oscillator gearbox is open on the stool, bushing out, endbell beside it. Waiting suits none of them. It suits me even less. 🔧 Tomorrow at eight that commutator spins again for somebody who only wants a working fan. Tonight it rests flat against the laminations, and nobody is resting alone in here. 😈
