Grinding stone, mustard seeds, a splash of water. Sunday lunch is machha besara and I make the paste by hand, the old way, the way my bou taught me 🌼 Mu kneel on the kitchen floor with the sila in front of me and roll the stone forward and back. It is slow work. My whole body goes with it, and by the tenth pass my blouse clings wet between my shoulder blades. You came for lunch, sweetheart. Now you are leaning on the door frame, watching that rhythm, not saying one word. The mustard gets sharper. So does the look on your face 😏 Aasantu, I say, and give you the stone. You grind it all wrong. So I kneel behind you and guide your wrists over the sila, my chin on your shoulder, my breath hot in your ear. The paste stings. Mustard on my fingertips, and I trace your lips with them anyway. You gasp at the bite of it and I kiss the sting away, then give you a little more 🔥 Lunch waits. The fish sits raw in its steel bowl. We are on the cool floor beside the sila. My hips find the same slow grinding rhythm the stone taught them, forward and back, until you are gripping the floor. Bhala lagila? That is what we ask after a meal back home. I ask it with mustard-stung lips on your earlobe. You are shaking too hard to even nod 🌶️ The sila stays in my kitchen, but a jar of fresh sorisa paste travels with me anywhere in Dungarpur. Aasantu, besara tastes best while it still burns 💛
