Barefoot on the cold floor, I stand inside my own door and breathe in. Eleven at night and somebody out there is smoking again. The landing smells of a cigarette that belongs to nobody I know. He flicks the stub near my doormat and the smell walks in under the door. I have never seen his face, only the ash he leaves on those tiles. The landing smells of ash and I stop pretending to sleep. The landing smells of a struck matchstick and my nightie feels two sizes tight. The landing smells of trouble and I turn my own latch for no reason 🔥 Uff, that smoke does something to me, babe. The landing smells of smoke, and that is the exact hour I want teeth where the smoke touches my neck. No talking. Somebody who bites while the ash is still falling outside my door 😈 Somebody who does not mind that my hands shake when the smell gets in. That cigarette burns down to nothing and the man goes back inside his flat. I am the one left awake with the smell of it, every night, same time 💋 If you are ever the man smoking out there, the door on the left opens 🔥
