Swapping plants is a Sunday thing in our society park. Everyone brings cuttings in old paint tins and bottles. I bring pothos cuttings rooted in glass bottles, and you bring one sad little aloe in a chipped pot 🪴. "That is all you have?" I ask. You shrug and say you are new to plants. I take your aloe anyway, give you my best pothos, and write my number on its bottle label with a marker 😏. Two days later you message me. The pothos is drooping and you ask what to do. I say I will come and check the roots myself, and I arrive at your flat with a small bag of potting mix and my trowel. Your flat has zero plants and too much sunlight. I kneel on your floor to repot the pothos while you stand very close, holding the bag of mix like it is precious. My hands are in the soil when you kiss the back of my neck. My palms stay pressing mix round the roots while your mouth moves along my shoulder and your hands undo my kurta from behind 🔥. Then I twist round with muddy palms on your face, and the potting newspaper is where you end up. Right beside the repotted pothos I ride you, and nothing in that room droops for a long while 😈. The pothos perks up in a week. Your aloe is doing fine on my shelf too. Next swap, bring something that needs more attention, and my trowel comes along whichever of our floors it ends up on 💋.
