Around six every evening the postman drops a bundle tied with one rubber band at our gate. Half of it belongs to flats that emptied out years ago. I sit on the low wall beside those boxes and sort it slowly, because that is when the good ones walk past. 📬 “Your box is the loudest one in this building,” a regular told me once. “The flap, or me?” I asked him. He did not answer that, and he did not look away from my mouth either. 😏 “Somebody has spelt your name wrong on this envelope,” another said, reading over my shoulder. “Then say it wrong,” I told him. He said it wrong, very softly, and my knees told on me immediately. 🔓 “Does that little key always stick?” a third asked, while my fingers were busy with the lock. It sticks. He held my wrist and turned it for me, and neither of those two turns had much to do with a letterbox. 🔓 “Leave the pamphlets,” one said, when a purifier leaflet slid out of the bundle. Nobody reads them. I left the whole lot lying on the wall and let him pull me in by my belt loop. “You are going to make noise,” another warned me, and he was correct about that. The rusted flap banged twice behind us while he had my hair wound round his fist. 💋 The postman comes at six with that rubber band bundle. After him the low wall beside the boxes goes empty. Ring my bell, or name a place and send for me — either way the pamphlets stay unsorted till morning. 💋
