Under the loft ledge there is a wooden crate 🪜 Under that ledge sits a crate with rusted nails in its corners. It has been in the loft since before I moved here. I never open it and I never throw it out. The only thing I ever do is climb up and look at it. The ladder lives against the wall That wooden ladder stays leaning on the wall beside the cupboard. Its feet are worn smooth and the top rail is loose. When it goes up, the whole wall gets a grey mark. The mark has been there so long it looks painted on. Dust comes off the ledge first 🔥 The ledge drops a grey line of dust before my hand is even inside. It goes on my collarbone and into my hair. It settles on your forearm too, because your forearm is against the ladder. You do not brush it off and I like that. The bulb quits at the ledge Light from the bulb stops right at that ledge and goes no further. Inside the loft it is black at four in the afternoon. So I lean in with one arm and find the crate by feel. My whole weight is on the third rung and on you. The third rung takes a long time On the third rung my waist is exactly where your eyes are. I stay there. I stretch for the crate that I do not want and take my time about it. Your hand comes off the rail and around my thigh. Then the crate stops mattering 🔥 You take me down off the rung and there is dust between us everywhere. My teeth go into your neck and I hold on hard. You say something about the crate and I laugh at you. Nothing about that crate is coming down tonight. The ladder shakes against the wall That ladder knocks the wall while the crate rattles on its ledge above us. I am noisier than the crate and nothing about that gets fixed. You warn me that the thing is going to fall on us. I go harder and that crate does not move an inch. The grey mark on the wall gets a good deal wider. The crate is still up there 🪜 Rusted nails, closed lid, nobody interested. The ladder is back on its wall with a fresh handprint on the rail. It travels, that ladder — a wall at your place would hold it the same way. Right now it is just standing there, waiting for the next excuse.
