Little things give me away. That rusted flap, the paint peeling off my box number, a bank statement from March that nobody has opened. Men notice the box first and me second, and then they stop noticing the box. “Nobody writes to you,” one said, flicking the bent corner of my statement. “You could,” I told him. He wrote nothing and came back twice that week, and the second time he did not look at the flap once. 😏 “That key is useless,” another said, watching me fight the little lock. “So fight it for me,” I said. He got it open in four seconds and then took much longer over the hooks on my blouse, and I let him. 🔥 “You are loud,” a third told me afterwards, with the whole row of boxes still ringing behind my back. That rusted flap bangs all night in the wind, and not one family at this gate has ever asked for it to be oiled. 💋 So the statement stays unopened and the paint keeps flaking off my number. I am at the gate most evenings with that little key in my fist. Lift the flap and I will know which one of you is standing there — or name your door and the bent envelope comes with me. 📬
