Sunday afternoon we ride out to the big nursery past the toll naka. Rows of saplings sit in black grow bags and a boy sprays them with a pipe. I walk between them in a cotton dress with sunglasses pushed up on my head 🌞. I pick up a jade plant and ask you to carry it. Then a snake plant, then a curry leaf sapling. Soon you are hugging four pots to your chest and I keep adding one more just to watch your face 😄. Under the green shade net it is humid and nobody else is around. I stand close behind you and hook my chin over your shoulder to read the tags with you, and my hand slips into your back pocket. The nursery uncle says the jade needs less water. I thank him with my eyes on you and not on him. You pay for everything with red ears and a crooked smile 😏. At my door the pots go down on the floor in a wobbly line. I do not let you wash the nursery soil off your palms. I tug off your nursery-dusty T-shirt, handsome, because I want those dirty hands on me. You leave muddy prints on my waist. I back you up against the shelf where the snake plant sits and kiss you until its pot tips and spills. That spilled mitti stays on the floor till morning 🔥. Then, between the grow bags, I straddle your hips and rock harder each time a sapling topples over. The curry leaf smell is on your fingers and in my hair. I come apart loudly, twice, while the jade plant watches from the corner 😈. Myself Pooja. A nursery trip ends at my door, or my jade plant waits on its shelf while I cross Latur to reach you.
