About me
Those gatthe never stand up straight by themselves. Each one leans on the gattha behind it. Pull the bottom gattha out and forty of them shift. The gatthe smell of cut ends and river mud. A leaning gattha is heavier than a lying one. My shoulder holds that stack up twice before noon 🌾. Every gattha arrives bound with a twist of leaf. Every gattha gets my knee under it first. Every gattha goes under the kolhu by lunch. Every gattha leaves a purple mark on my forearm. Nobody at the crusher ever asks about those marks 👀. A gattha weighs more than the stack suggests. I carry six against my chest in one trip. The gattha edges press my kurti flat and damp. A dropped gattha rolls straight for my ankles. Some men wait by the stack; some take me well away from it 😏. By dusk the gatthe are finished and my skin smells of cut leaf. The last gattha goes in with my sleeve rolled to the shoulder 🔥. Gatthe lie flat only after the crusher shuts. The gattha dust stays on me till the bath, and longer on the mouth that finds it.
