Always the same bundle at our gate — leaflets, a rate card, a bank statement nobody has opened since March. My slot is too narrow, so every envelope comes out bent at one corner. 📄 “You get more post than anyone in this lane,” one man said, watching me pull a bent leaflet free. “None of it is written to me,” I told him. He looked at my mouth and said he could fix that. 😏 “Is that your name or a typing mistake?” another asked, reading the short spelling over my shoulder. Both, I said. He used the mistake all evening and I answered to it every single time. 🔓 “Let me,” a third said, when the little key would not turn. He turned it, and his grip stayed on my fingers long after that little lock gave up. Nothing else in the gateway stayed shut either. 🔥 “Somebody is watching from the balcony,” one whispered, with my back flat against the row of boxes. Let them watch. I pulled his collar until the flap banged and the whole row of metal complained. 🔥 “You are shaking,” another said, and he was not wrong. The bent envelope was still in my fist and I had crushed it into a ball without noticing. 💋 “Should I post something to you?” asked the last one, buttoning up. Post nothing. Stand at that narrow slot instead. I open before the second knock, and one knock has never been where my evening ends. 📬 Six envelopes in the bin, a bent bank statement wedged behind my flap, and a key that still sticks. My gate, or wherever you are — the only thing I will carry is that short-spelt envelope.
