Drilled holes in a bakelite plate line up on the first try because the ammeter has trained my hands. It sits at the end of my table and it has never flattered me once. 🔥 What the windings are drawing, and nothing else — that is all the ammeter says. One and a half, maybe two. A needle climbing past three means a mistake somewhere in the stator, and then I go and find it. Ammeter reads, I decide, and the ammeter has never argued. A rotor that sounds fine to a man in the doorway still goes onto the ammeter first. 👀 Slow where it matters and quick where it does not: the needle taught me which is which. Stator slots get an hour each. My sandals come off in the first ten minutes. When the laminations are good that needle sits dead still. My hands are not sitting still at all by then, and the ammeter has no reading for that. 💋 Growler, megger, multimeter, ammeter — four boxes on one shelf and only one gets left out at night. It stays out because the last stator of the day is always mine. 🔧 Ammeter is face down on my table because I knocked it over getting up. Growler, megger and multimeter are all still upright, which tells you which box I was reaching past 😈
