Whip cuts are the only cuts I make on this grafting bench. Good scion wood waits for the cool hours before anything happens. Cambium on both halves must meet, flat and tight. All three reasons are about the scion wood. 1️⃣ Dormant scion. Sealed buds stay shut until the joint takes hold. Scion sticks lie wrapped on the benchtop all morning, waiting for my knife. Scion sticks get cut at this hour by my hands only. 2️⃣ Green cambium. Thin and wet, that layer shows itself for a second only. Parafilm goes on before the green dries out. My thumb knows the depth and does not go past it. 🌿 3️⃣ Tight wrap. Budwood ties down under my left hand while the right stays on the scion. Grafting fails if that wrap loosens even once.
