Zara look at the slip stuck in my meter box door, the disconnection notice with a date on it. Men see that folded slip and say the same three things to me every week 🔌 "They are going to cut your line," is the first one, said like a warning. The second is better. "Kaun kaatega, mujhe batao." I let the slip stay stuck there and answer neither of them straight. The third line comes with a hand on my back. "Pay it and I will watch you do it." That slip has been read out loud in my doorway by four men and none of them finished the sentence standing up 🔥 One of them folded the notice smaller and pushed it into his shirt pocket. "Ab koi nahi kaategaa," he said, pleased with himself, babe. My teeth were on his throat before he got the pocket buttoned. The slip fell out of his pocket somewhere near my palang and got creased under a knee. His belt went one way, my kurti the other. Nobody looked for that notice till morning 😈 That disconnection slip is back in the box door now, with its date gone by. My line is still live and so is everything in my room, at a much higher rate than before. The slip is waiting there for the next man who wants to read a date out loud.
